"The Pond" has won the 2018 Christopher Hewitt Award for gay fiction.

John Whittier Treat was raised and schooled in New England but has spent most of his adult life living in the Pacific Northwest and Asia. He has taught at the University of Washington, Berkeley, Stanford, Texas, Seoul National University, Ewha Womans University and Yale. He is the author of several book-length works of criticism, one novel, a memoir and many short stories. The Rise and Fall of the Yellow House was issued in the fall of 2015 by Big Table Publishing (http:/​/​​). Treat is at work on a new novel entitled First Consonants, the story of a stutter who saves the world.
